Rotating & Lifting Dome Theater Unveiled: Technology Decodes the Wonder of the Yellow River’s Suspended River

Kaifeng Yellow River Suspended River Cultural Park launched its trial operation this summer vacation. Led by a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and inspired by a famous Northern Song Dynasty painting, the cultural park aims to build China’s first immersive destination themed on Yellow River civilisation. It now features a rotating and lifting dome circular-screen theater. One of its core pieces of equipment, the rotating and lifting viewing platform, is expertly engineered by Jinma Rides.

Bringing the Yellow River to Life: Technology Empowers the Millennium-Old Cultural Wonder

The story of Yellow River civilisation cannot be told in two dimensions. From the “suspended river above ground” and the millennia-old stacked-city phenomenon of “city upon city”, to epics of river governance and new chapters of ecological restoration, these narratives demand storytelling beyond flat screens.

Different from traditional dome theaters thaRotating & Lifting Dome Theater Unveiled 1t adopt a fixed upward-view passive watching mode, this project is equipped with a circular dynamic cabin platform integrated with three drive modules for lifting, rotation and tilting. It delivers 3-degree-of-freedom dynamic motion synchronized with the film plot. When the Yellow River surges on screen, the cabins rise gently in tandem. As the layered history of ancient cities unfolds, the platform rotates to switch multi-dimensional bird’s-eye views. During scenes of rushing canyon rapids, seat tilting aligns precisely with the rhythm of footage. Instead of merely watching the Yellow River, visitors decode the millennial cultural wonder through immersive technology and step into the Yellow River’s timeline in person.

90 Riders, 5-Metre Elevation: Building the Grand Narrative of the Dome Theater

The scale of this theater itself delivers breathtaking impact. It accommodates 90 visitors, with a maximum rotating and lifting height of 5 metres, paired with a 360° circular screen and capsule-shaped dome canopy. When activated, all 90 visitors are lifted over 5 metres into the air to enter the giant dome narrative space. As the entire cabin rises, the dome screen unfolds overhead, surrounded by 360° panoramic imagery. The grandeur of the space converges perfectly with the grandeur of the content.

The 5-metre lifting height frees the cabin from ground constraints, enabling greater freedom of movement and deeper visual depth. The 90 visitors are transported simultaneously into varied narrative scenes: surging Yellow River waters, stacked ancient cities, and canyon adventures. A single machine serves as an immersive theater that carries nearly one hundred guests on a journey through time.

This combination of passenger capacity and motion range imposes stringent requirements on structural strength, synchronous control accuracy and safety redundancy design. Lifting, rotating and tilting 90 passengers at once multiplies load calculations and balance control challenges. Supported by robust craftsmanship and a sophisticated control system, Jinma Rides ensures this “group immersive ride” operates with rock-solid stability.

More Than Motion: “Breathing” Seats Deliver Tangible Immersion

If the three-axis movements form the “skeleton” of immersion, special effects including water spray, wind blow, scent release and seat vibration embedded in the seats bring the dome theater to life with sensory experience.

The special effect system is deeply linked to film scenes with millisecond-level synchronization. As Yellow River waves rush toward the audience, fine water mist sprays from the nozzles. When the footage shows misty river scenery, the aroma system releases delicate fragrance. In high-speed diving sequences, air jets blow from the sides of seats to simulate wind whistling past ears, accompanied by cabin vibration. Visitors see the waves and feel the water; they view the mist and inhale the scent; they watch the wind and feel it brush against them. This dual-channel “visual + sensory” storytelling does not simply let audiences watch a movie, but lets them live through the story.
